I have been in the position of trying to get a design job before the recession and it was not a nice experience, so i feel for anyone who is having to go through that now. I used to just design for print, but the number of jobs that wanted an all in one print and web designer was wake up call. You would not expect a plumber to do your electrics as well, but that seems to be the case in our industry. If anyone is the unfortunate position of being of work, my advice would be to try and keep upto date with trends as it is all to easy to get stuck in a rut and fall behind.

Re: Epic Change – Building a Locally-Led School in Tanzania

Forgot the link: http://bit.ly/blobresults

Re: Epic Change – Building a Locally-Led School in Tanzania

I am so proud to pass along the word that Epic Change won the $10k contest! But I digress.

Okay, good - there is some entertainment value then, I can go with that, I can work with it.

I do agree though that the "eating a sandwich" or "just dropped my pen" just makes me wonder. Where's the creativity? Can't they at least say "eating a sandwich made of earthworms sauteed in a wine reduction sauce. Still tastes earthy" -or- "just dropped my pen down my boss' pants and had to retrieve. Awkward. But did get a raise, literally and figuratively."

I mean, COME ON people. It's like you bake your tweets almost as nicely as your RVC (well, I can only imagine it's the bomb...because my version of your cake is the bomb, and I'm sure I'm doing something slightly off).

Your tweets make me laugh nearly every single time I read...so, you're exempt. And I guess, that's a part of this whole conversation....there are certainly ways to add value without links, @replies and whatnot. I have to admit...I'm kind of a lame tweeter. Okay, I have never tweeted "eating a sandwich" and I hate that nonsense when I see it. But I do just kind of tweet about nonsense.

Case in point (here I am, bashing myself, per usual), here is my last tweet: My hair is so dry that if I rubbed it on itself, it would start a fire.

Could that be ANY more nonsense oriented? I think not. I'm just a linkless fool wandering about Twitter, making an ass of myself.

Hey, at least your not me. Count yourself lucky. I too think about my purpose, and if my work impacts others and makes the world a better place. The fact that you think this way is a step in the right direction. It takes creative people to create the jobs that do this, usually. If there is good in your heart, and your intentions are positive, the universe will move you in the direction desired, as your attitude dictates your life, typically. (I got that one from the movie, Mulholland Drive lol). We know that you support a wife that is fortunate to have your help to afford her life of working in her passion, and you have three happy children. You impact them positively and that's a great reward in itself. The rest will come. Sometimes we want things to move faster than the universe allows. Keep sharing those ideas, and like-minded individuals will help you CONTINUE to make the world a better place. That's my best answer.
-Sommer, the child bodyslammer

Re: Fritter? It is too public to be for a person's real friends. For this reason, I think twitter should only be used for companies and brands (celebrities, news anchors and co) because they need the following for the success of their brands. But the trick is to follow any of these companies or celebs effectively, you have to open a twitter account. I don't own a twitter account to know exactly how twitter runs their ad campaigns but it seems they are using public images and companies to attract their fanbase to their site, and I don't think this is such a good thing for advertising unlike facebook where the users are already present and the companies come to them.

I know it is easier for me to subscribe to an application on a social network I already use than it is for me to open another social network account.

Re: Changing Lives: What Are We Doing Today?

thanks for the thoughtful post, greg. the good news is that there are lots of people out there willing to help... i run a small nonprofit, Hippo Roller International, on a volunteer basis - and i'm consistently blown away by the number of talented people who volunteer their time, energy and expertise to help us in our mission to make a positive impact on the 1 in 6 people who have very limited access to water. the result is that we're accomplishing amazing things, and at the end of the day, everyone feels really good about their involvement. precious, especially in these tough times.

Re: Changing Lives: What Are We Doing Today?

Well said. It's funny, I've recently been embroiled in a different version of this conversation, and it was refreshing to read your take.

It reminded me of a post from Alanna Shaikh at http://bloodandmilk.org/. She wrote:

"We’re all in this together. We’re not in this line of work because we want to help far-away strangers. We’re in it because, in the end, we’re one big blob of people on one scarred messy planet, and no one is truly healthy when others are bleeding. We are connected; there’s no way around it.
